Eye Laser Consulting and Dr. Robert M. Kershner support the latest technological breakthrough in the early diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. Glaucoma, a disease that affects millions of people worldwide (check out "Your Eyes" on this website for more information), can result in blindness if not diagnosed early before visual loss occurs.  Traditionally, ophthalmologists measure eye pressure with tonometry (18 to 20mm is a normal range), examine the optic nerve inside the eye for signs of damage (cupping), and record a computerized visual field analysis to detect loss of peripheral or side vision.  Recent advances in computer technology has enabled researchers to develop a highly powerful computer 1.7 GigaHertz that can be coupled to a laser scanning digital camera to image and record the appearance of the optic nerve without the need for dilating drops.  These images, or scans, are then recorded and analyzed by the computer creating a three-dimensional image of the nerve.  The computer can detect the slightest changes from normal, long before it can be detected by the physician with conventional examination equipment and before actual visual field loss occurs.  This tremendous breakthrough may enable surgeons to detect and treat glaucoma years before it actually affects a person's vision.  An incredible advance, the HRT is the result of years of computer development and scanning laser technology.  All individuals who have glaucoma, or are at risk of developing glaucoma due to family history, drug therapy, previous injury, or diabetes should have this HRT examination performed in our offices right now.  Followup examinations are advised at least annually thereafter and more frequently if the diagnosis of glaucoma necessitates treatment.  Ask Dr. Kershner about this amazing new technology that may prevent loss of vision.

Recently the international news magazine, Newsweek featured an article on "Seeing is Believing-Hope for the Blind" by noted Newsweek reporter, Brad Stone featuring surgery by Dr. Kershner on the incredible new Implantable Miniature Telescope for macular degeneration.

KEEP YOUR EYES SAFE DURING ANY HOLIDAY CELEBRATION! Every holiday season, from New Year's to anniversaries, millions of bottles of champagne will be uncorked. But lurking behind the scenes is an often-unforeseen danger, according to Robert M. Kershner, M.D., F.A.C.S., Director of Eye Laser Consulting in Boston, Massachusetts and Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology. "Most people don't think about it, but hundreds of Americans every year suffer needless eye injuries during the holidays." To stay safe during this time of year, Dr. Kershner suggests "When using sporting equipment, make sure to use appropriate protective headgear such as helmets, facemasks or goggles with protective polycarbonate lenses. Tennis and racket balls, can cause serious eye injuries. If at all possible avoid playing with toys that shoot projectiles." Adults should be aware when a bottle of champagne is opened in a careless manner during the holidays. Like any high velocity missile, a champagne cork carelessly misdirected at a bystander can cause serious and often painful and permanent injury to the eye. When spirits are high, most people do not think about the potential tragedy a flying champagne cork can cause." Dr. Kershner recommends following a few simple tips to prevent eye injury: 1. Keep the champagne bottle cold at all times. A warm bottle of champagne is more likely to blow its cork unexpectedly. 2. Be prepared for an unexpected explosion of the cork when the foil covering and wire hood are removed. Always cover the cork with several layers of towel prior to opening. Grasp the cork with the towel and slowly and firmly twist it to break the seal, keeping the bottle at a 45-degree angle. 3. Never point the top of a champagne bottle towards any object you do not want to hit. Enjoy your celebration with both eyes wide open but safely protected.

Greetings from EYE LASER CONSULTING TO FRIENDS, PATIENTS AND COLLEAGUES around the world.

When Becton Dickinson & Company (BD), a 3.6 billion dollar medical technology company that manufactures and sells a broad range of medical supplies, devices and systems for use by healthcare professionals, medical research institutions, industry and the general public, looks to feature a surgeon on the cover of its 2000 Annual Report, they turned to Tucson ophthalmologist, Robert M. Kershner, M.D., F.A.C.S. In its featured articles on “Tools for Human Health,” B.D. invited Dr. Kershner to be interviewed and photographed for the report. “In recent years, nothing less than a revolution has occurred in ophthalmic surgery – the stuff of science fiction,” according to Robert M. Kershner, M.D., F.A.C.S., a pioneer in refractive and cataract surgery. LASIK, the new eye reshaping laser procedure, which has received all the recent media attention, is dependent upon a microkeratome blade, the instrument surgeons use to generate a smooth consistent cut in the cornea." Dr. Kershner, who has helped to develop new surgical blades for cataract and refractive surgery, was quoted in the article, "Improving Human Health… in the Operating Room.” B.D. has been a cutting edge medical technology company offering new products in ophthalmic surgery such as the clear cornea incision system, and the new “atomic edge blade,” which is comparable to a diamond blade – currently the sharpest surgical blade – for use in eye microsurgery. “When one of the top medical technology companies in the world calls upon you for your photograph and input, its hard to say no,” said Dr. Kershner. “What I didn’t know when I consulted with BD, was that they would feature me in their article on surgery and use my photograph on the cover of their 2000 Annual Report.” Dr. Kershner who specializes in cataract and refractive surgery and practiced ophthalmology in Tucson, Arizona. He has authored over two hundred scientific articles, contributed to eighteen textbooks on eye microsurgery and lectures internationally to other ophthalmologists. He can be reached at the Eye Laser Consulting in Boston, MAssachusetts.

Dr. Kershner, who is Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Utah School of Medicine, Moran Eye Center and Director Emeritus of the Eye Laser Center in Tucson, Arizona, was honored as the IK HO Visiting Professor of Ophthalmology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
